MJA has made significant contributions to advancing energy transition and corporate climate action across Asia, with a focus on the Philippines, Vietnam, and broader Southeast Asia. Below are some of the key impacts to date:
Key Achievements
ASEAN Power Grid Leadership: MJA has provided thought leadership in the drafting and strategic planning of the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, presenting specialized knowledge products at five major international events, including the V20, COP27, and COP28. These contributions have helped shape discussions on regional energy integration and sustainability.
Clean Energy Investment Mobilization: MJA, through its involvement with the CEIA, has significantly contributed to advancing renewable energy across Southeast Asia. To date, MJA has helped mobilize over 50 MW of renewable energy capacity and facilitated approximately $50 million in clean energy investments.
Behind-the-Meter Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): MJA played a key role in identifying and facilitating the deployment of Behind-the-Meter Battery Energy Storage Systems (BTM BESS) in two industrial estates, presenting a $20 million market opportunity for clean energy solutions in the region.
E3G Research Collaboration on Philippine Political Economy: AENZ, in partnership with E3G, contributed to a research paper on the political economy of the Philippines in the context of monetary and fiscal policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper provided an ecosystem mapping of significant political and economic factors influencing the country's transition to a sustainable economy, with a focus on driving green and inclusive recovery efforts. The findings from this collaboration have been instrumental in shaping policy recommendations for sustainable economic development in the Philippines.
OurEnergy2030 Platform: MJA designed and launched OurEnergy2030, a youth-led platform advocating for an inclusive and responsive energy transition in Southeast Asia. The platform has engaged hundreds of youth and policymakers, pushing for stronger climate action in the region.
CITA Launch and Funding: MJA co-designed and launched the Corporate and Industrial Transition Accelerator (CITA) as the successor to CEIA, securing foundational funding of $1.2 million to support its programs aimed at decarbonizing corporate and industrial sectors across Asia.
Design and Launch of AENZ: MJA successfully designed and launched the Asia Engine for Net Zero Institute, Inc. (AENZ), a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the energy transition across Southeast Asia. Since its inception, AENZ has achieved significant milestones in renewable energy and sustainable finance initiatives.
Pioneering Agrivoltaics Socialization: MJA, in collaboration with WRI China, spearheaded the first large-scale socialization of agrivoltaics in the Philippines at the Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) 2024. The initiative reached over 5,000 industry partners and facilitated key discussions on the potential for agrivoltaics deployment. Furthermore, MJA engaged 28 financial institutions in the Philippines, collectively representing over $3 billion in potential financing for agrivoltaics projects.
Industry-First Feasibility Study on Agrivoltaics: AENZ completed a comprehensive feasibility study on agrivoltaics in the Philippines, exploring both technical and financial aspects. The study has ignited discussions among developers and financial institutions, serving as a benchmark for future agrivoltaic projects.
Engagement and Training Initiatives: AENZ has actively engaged SME banks, policymakers, and renewable energy professionals through targeted workshops and training programs. These initiatives have enhanced the understanding of green finance opportunities and facilitated knowledge transfer to key stakeholders in the finance and energy sectors.
Vietnam Full Operating License: MJA successfully obtained a full operating license in Vietnam, enhancing its capability to deliver consultancy services and expand clean energy solutions in one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic markets.
Highlights
Vietnam Carbon Markets: MJA facilitated the first industry collaboration on Vietnam’s carbon markets through the Global Climate Action Partnership (GCAP), driving forward the development of carbon trading mechanisms that are critical for Vietnam’s energy transition and decarbonization goals.
Philippines Carbon Finance Engagement: MJA, through the Energy Transition Council Philippines, engaged the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and other stakeholders in panel discussions related to energy transition and climate finance, including on emerging carbon markets in the Philippines.
Department of Energy (DOE) Engagement with GWEC: MJA engaged the Philippine DOE in a roundtable with the Clean Energy Investment Accelerator (CEIA), and GWEC, leading to the DOE's decision to reconsider the 24/7 requirement for the GEOP, enabling more flexible corporate renewable energy procurement.
