“Greening the Banks” Initiative Virtual Dialogue Series

MJA discussed the challenges Southeast Asia faces as a preeminent global economy with a growing population and increasing energy needs. The discussion centered on converting technical and policy ambitions into political action and private sector engagement to achieve ASEAN's net-zero goals. Marlon emphasized WRI's role in mobilizing big energy buyers through initiatives like the Science Based Targets initiative and the RE100 coalition, pointing out the importance of these companies in driving demand for renewable energy due to shareholder, customer, and employee pressures.

UK Government-Led “Energy Transition Council”: Clean Energy Working Group

MJA co-leads the Energy Transition Council (ETC) Clean Energy Working Group and facilitates discussions among working group members on issues pertaining to energy systems and ancillary services, offshore wind deployment through the development of marine spatial planning systems and permitting processes, and increasing grid connectivity.

OurEnergy2030, a youth engagement platform for an inclusive and responsive energy transition

MJA provided strategic insights and platform design and implementation expertise to OurEnergy2030, a youth-led intergenerational alliance-building platform. OurEnergy2030 was launched in Manila in February 2020 as a next-generation coalition of youth, local governments, businesses, start-ups, and healthcare professionals advocating for a responsive and inclusive energy transition. Through MJA's guidance OurEnergy2030 developed 92 Social Media Pieces Produced, reaching 428,665 social media users in 2021. MJA supported OurEnergy2030 in convening the Vision20/30 which pushed for the adoption of energy transition and climate action as leading youth and public demands to policymakers and bipartisan political leadership in the 2022 Philippine national elections.

Asia Agrivoltaics Initiative

The "Asia Agrivoltaics Initiative'' is a proposed collaborative and transaction support platform aimed at accelerating investment in agrivoltaics across Southeast Asia. Leveraging China's extensive experience in agrivoltaics, the initiative will focus initially on Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines, with the ultimate goal of fostering sustainable agriculture, promoting renewable energy, and enhancing economic development in the region.

At a closed-door partners’ convening, MJA provided expert commentary and a presentation on the political economy given the results of the May 2022 Philippine elections to the Philanthropy and the CSOs they partner with in the Philippines.

Renewable Energy Finance Prospects and Strategy for Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development Retreat

MJA prepared a comprehensive presentation on the growth and challenges of RE financing in the Philippines. Key highlights of the presentation include the comparative slow growth in RE generating capacity versus the expansion of coal capacity, the evolution of solar pricing globally and locally, and challenges and opportunities within the country's Green Energy Option Program and Green Energy Auctions. These were presented as a way to frame how to support increased RE financing.

MJA participated in the COP28 side event to highlight WRI's unique role as a convenor and coordinator of private sector corporates in Southeast Asia's energy transition through its initiatives like the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the Science-Based Targets Initiative, and the Asia Clean Energy Coalition. Marlon tackled the challenges posed by the shrinking civic space, with examples from Vietnam, and the sensitive balance needed when engaging with governments in the region.

MJA helped establish the Asia Engine for Net Zero Institute, Inc. or AENZ, a non-profit organization based in the Philippines that serves as a collaborative platform and resource center advocating for an inclusive, responsive, and sustainable energy landscape through innovative finance platforms, policy advocacy, deployment of skilled energy finance professionals to different fields, and promotion of corporate decarbonization solutions. AENZ envisions a future where sustainable energy solutions power thriving communities across the Philippines and the broader region. Our aspiration is to be a catalyst for a transformative shift towards an inclusive, responsive, and sustainable energy transition.

Finance Innovation Lab through the Asia Engine for Net Zero

The Finance Innovation Lab is a project under the Asia Engine for Net Zero (AENZ) that aims to scope, develop, and socialize innovative and/or blended finance platforms and support transactions that increase renewable energy deployment. The Finance Innovation Lab is currently developing a consortium to pilot an agrivoltaic project in the the Philippines with the ultimate goal of establishing a fund-of-fund to finance agrivoltaic expansion in the region.
